Getting help
Email [email protected]. That is the whole support system. There is no ticket portal, no chatbot, and no account to log into.
It helps if you can include:
- what you were doing, and what happened instead
- your iPhone or Apple Watch model and which version of iOS or watchOS you are on
- the version of Chalk (Settings, at the bottom)
- a screenshot, if there is something to see
None of that is required. “My count is wrong on the watch” is a perfectly good email.
How long you will wait
Usually a few days. One inbox, one person, so no same-day promises, but every email gets read and every email gets an answer.
If a week goes by with nothing, please send it again. It means the first one got lost, not that it got ignored.

What does Settle actually do?
It closes the current cycle and starts a new one. The ticks you have made so far are filed together as a settled cycle, with their total, their count and the dates they ran, and the counter goes back to zero.
Nothing is deleted. That is the difference between Settle and a reset button, and it is the reason the app exists. You will find every cycle you ever settled under the counter’s history.
Where is my data?
On your device, and in your own iCloud if you are signed in.
There is no account with me and no server behind Chalk. Sync runs through your private iCloud database, which Apple encrypts and which I have no access to. I could not look at your counters if I wanted to.

Does Chalk work without iCloud?
Yes, fully. Signed out of iCloud, Chalk keeps everything on that device and no feature is withheld. The only thing you lose is sync between your own devices.
How do I move to a new phone?
If you use iCloud, sign in on the new phone and your counters arrive on their own. If you do not, restore the new phone from an iPhone backup and Chalk’s data comes across with everything else.
Chalk can also export everything as CSV, which is a good thing to keep for your own records, though it is a spreadsheet rather than a restore file.
My watch and my phone disagree
Open Chalk on both, with the watch on your wrist and the phone nearby. Changes pass directly between the paired devices, and iCloud catches up separately, so a device that has been out of range or in Low Power Mode can be a few ticks behind for a while.
If they are still out of step after both apps have been open together for a minute, email me and say which count each one shows.
Why did my price change not fix an old cycle?
Because it is not supposed to. Every tick records the price that applied at the moment you tapped it. Raise your therapist’s rate in September and August still reads what August actually cost.
If you need to correct a genuine mistake, delete the tick from the counter’s history and add it again at the right price.
What does it cost?
Nothing. Chalk is free, with no in-app purchase, no subscription and no counter limit. Every feature is there for everyone: as many counters as you like, the widgets, the whole Apple Watch app, Siri and Shortcuts, CSV export, the alternate app icons and sync.
There is nothing to buy, so there is nothing to restore on a new phone and nothing to cancel.
Why do archived counters exist, if there is no limit?
To clear the board without losing history. Archiving takes a counter off the main list and keeps every cycle you settled on it, which is the gentler option when you are done with something but do not want it gone. Deleting is the permanent one.
Can I share a counter with someone else?
Not today. Chalk is your own record, on your own devices. A shared counter needs two people to agree on what happened, which is a much bigger app than this one.
How do I delete something?
Swipe a counter away to delete it, with its ticks and its settled cycles, on this device and on every device you sync with. That one cannot be undone, so archive instead if you only want it off the board.
Deleting the app removes the local copy of everything. To remove the synced copy too, use iOS Settings, then your name, then iCloud, and manage storage for Chalk.
Asking for a feature

Email [email protected] with “feature” somewhere in the subject line, and tell me what you were trying to keep track of rather than the button you want. “Three of us take turns paying for lunch and I lose track of whose turn it is” is more useful than “add split mode”, because it leaves room for a better answer than either of us thought of first.
Two things worth saying up front:
- Most requests are good and still will not be built. Chalk stays quick to use partly by staying small.
- Some are deliberate no’s rather than backlog items. Chalk will not become an expense tracker, a budget app, or anything that asks you to categorise a purchase. One tap is the whole interaction, and features that slow that down do not go in.
